Perimenopause is a natural, yet often misunderstood, phase in a woman’s life. It marks the gradual transition towards menopause, often beginning in the early 40s, though for some women it can start earlier or later.
During this time, hormonal fluctuations can bring a variety of physical and emotional changes. Mood swings, sleep disturbances, hot flushes, anxiety, and changes in skin health are all common but they don’t have to define this chapter of life.
In many ancient traditions, this phase was seen as a rite of passage a time of deepening wisdom and inner strength. I believe it’s time we returned to honouring this transition and supporting ourselves gently and naturally along the way. Something I have embraced fully myself.
The Power of Aromatherapy
Essential oils have been used for centuries to support women’s wellbeing offering both physical relief and emotional comfort. Their therapeutic properties work not only through the skin but also through the powerful connection between our sense of smell and the nervous system.
Here are some of my favourite essential oils to support you during perimenopause:
Clary Sage
Often called “the woman’s oil,” Clary Sage is known for its ability to support hormonal balance. It may help ease hot flushes and night sweats, while its soothing aroma encourages emotional calm. Some studies have even shown that inhaling Clary Sage can help reduce cortisol levels, supporting stress relief and a sense of wellbeing.
Please note: Avoid Clary Sage during pregnancy.
Rose
Rose has been revered for centuries for its connection to the feminine heart. Cooling, nurturing, and comforting, Rose oil supports not just the physical body but the emotional heart too especially helpful for feelings of overwhelm, sadness, or disconnection. It reminds us to soften, to return to ourselves, and to honour our journey.
Geranium
A beautifully balancing oil, Geranium helps to stabilise mood, soothe nervous tension, and support hormonal harmony. It’s also known for its skin loving properties, making it ideal for this phase when skin health can sometimes be affected.
How to Use Essential Oils for Perimenopause
It’s easy to welcome these oils into your daily rituals. Here’s how:
- Diffusion: Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a diffuser to fill your space with calming, balancing aroma.
- Topical Application: Blend up to 25 drops of essential oil in 100ml of a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba and organic where possible, and massage gently into the skin, focusing on areas like the abdomen, lower back, or shoulders.
- Bath Rituals: Add a few drops of essential oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil, then stir into a warm bath for a therapeutic soak. Never add essential oils directly to water without dilution.
A Loving Reminder
Perimenopause is not a problem to be fixed — it’s a transition to be supported with care, knowledge, and compassion.
By weaving essential oils into your routine, you offer yourself moments of calm, connection, and natural support. Always consult a qualified professional if you have specific concerns, medical conditions, or questions about contraindications.
Embrace this time with grace. Your body holds ancient wisdom trust her.
